Ah, 1989, how I miss thee
Hard to believe this was TWENTY FRICKING YEARS AGO. :P Gah. But going through my stuff I found one of my old favorite songs from that era.

Like many songs of the late 80s, it had a ton of mixes, and the one in the video is not my favorite... however it is 90% as I remember.

Let's also not forget M.A.R.R.S' Pump Up the Volume -- or this alternative mix. I used to (and still do) love the diversity of sounds they could get from a combination of samples and scratches.

    First mp3s
I found a zip disk earlier tonight that had a number of my original mp3s, created Oct 28, 1997, including Daft Punk's "Around the World," several Prodigy songs, and Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds, all of which I went on to buy legally I might add. :P Oh, and the Men In Black theme. :P

Hard to believe that format has been around for 12+ years already, but there you go.

    Hah...
From a random link passed to me by someone or another:
    >>> The meerkats also humped frequently, but they're on birth control.
    >> Wow birth control. I didn't know female animals used birth control. How they take it orally or with some other way?
    > They're on birth control. They can take it however they want.

    Christmas followup
The power failure continued until about 4pm, though somehow my mom's gas log fireplace worked, despite it being switch-actuated. I'm still trying to figure that one out... maybe some kind of thermocouple or something. Anyway, we at least had "some" heat.

Ended up having to bail out on one of the two Christmas parties, but we did go to one, along with one of my mom's close friends from college and one of my better-known aunts.

Stayed over at my mom's another night because the weather was still terrible (more freezing rain, though it didn't stick)

Bit of a blizzard this morning, only about 2-3"

Decided to get breakfast with a great aunt of mine. We were running super late for a variety of reasons. Finally got out to get that done, then my mom needed help with the iPod Touch someone got her for Christmas. Giving my mom technology presents is, to quote Father of the Pride, like letting a drunk child operate farm machinery. She still doesn't understand the notion of what a folder is, drag/drop, etc. So yeah, explaining how to import a CD was sort of a challenge.

BUT... she did enjoy me being around, and she liked my "big gift" for her (a food vacuum-packer thing). So I guess all's well that ends well. I stopped briefly at a pawn shop and a music store I used to haunt as a high schooler, priced out pneumatic nailguns so I can do a faster number on the renovations for the next week or so before I need to go back to work. Hard to believe my vacation is over half done already. D: I really need about 3 months off work.

Maybe I can get a "stress vacation" or something. Stress is sort of a disability, right?!

    christmas so far
    * braved ice storm to drive to mom's house - 18 cars in the ditch
    * canceled xmas eve party due to weather
    * received a small gift from my kidneys
    * power failure for the last couple hours (and no backup heat source here, i.e. fire)
    * mom has larengitis and at least currently feels too sick to go anywhere

so much for me doing the "responsible son" thing and driving here despite the weather. ah well, she at least appreciates my
    presence, heh.

    Three things
    1. I saw Avatar, I thought it was beautifully done; but I also thought that the storyline was a bit weak. Yay for actors overplaying their parts. I'm pretty sure my favorite characters are all of the usual suspects, and my favorite part occurred early on. I won't expand on that just yet :P

    2. I have a 4.0 for the fall 2009 semester

    3. Merry Christmas from our favorite pedophile fat man

    Holidays
I know I haven't been very good keeping track of everyone here, I guess I should pare down the list of watched people, but I don't really want to lose those connections either -- sorta wish there'd be a "friends" list and a "curious about" list. :)

Anyway, it's the 22nd, which means it's about time for me to start shopping for the holidays. I don't know why, but I always find myself magically arriving at Dec 20th without warning. This year it was the trip last week to Minnesota. Alas.

My mom's expectations are pretty lenient this year, just go out xmas eve, come back xmas day (late). It's always fun to see everyone, but I dunno. As much fun as it is to create the veneer of holiday cheer (decorations/etc) I find that it's a real chore/ordeal to do all that stuff, while also working all the time. I used to always think it was sad how people would see Christmas as "just another day," but really, instead of weeks of buildup (decorations going up, tree shopping, cookie baking) it's like "OH CRAP I NEED GIFTS traveltraveltravel pretend-smile done."

Honestly the way I think I'd most enjoy the holiday season is sitting at home not being bothered by people. Does that make me a bad person? Or maybe hosting a potluck-slash-movie-night. Err, that's "slash-movie" not "slash movie"... because a holiday slash movie night might be a little weird.

That said, I like being social too, but just... not being forced to be social, with all the expectations of gifts, dressing fancy, etc.

    Anyway... merry solstice, everyone!
